Prof. Makane Moise Mbengue

Makane Moïse Mbengue is a distinguished Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva, where he also serves as the Director of the Department of International Law and International Organization.

Additionally, he holds the position of Affiliate Professor at Sciences Po Paris, School of Law. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Public International Law from the University of Geneva.

Since 2017, Prof. Mbengue has served as the President of the African Society of International Law (AfSIL), demonstrating his leadership and commitment to advancing legal scholarship and practice in Africa.

Prof. Mbengue’s expertise is highly sought after globally, as evidenced by his role as an expert for various prestigious organizations including the African Union, the United Nations (UN), the UN Economic Commission for Africa, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, International Labour Organization (ILO), Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), among others. He also teaches courses in International Law organized by the UN Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Beyond academia and expert advisory roles, he actively engages in international dispute resolution as counsel before international courts and tribunals, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and in investment cases. He also provides advisory services to governments and actively participates in the negotiation of International Investment Agreements in Africa.

Prof. Mbengue is a prolific author with numerous publications in the field of international law, contributing significantly to scholarly discourse and legal developments globally.

His multifaceted contributions and leadership in international law underscore his profound impact on legal education, practice, and policy formulation across Africa and beyond.
