New York, USA- 27th September 2024 – The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) held its annual Recognition Ceremony on September 27, 2024, uniting global leaders, innovators, and changemakers to celebrate the achievements of individuals of African descent. This prestigious event, held alongside the United Nations General Assembly, marked the conclusion of the 1st UN International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024) and showcased the profound impact of Black professionals across diverse sectors.
The ceremony bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award upon notable global figures: President Nana Akufo-Addo (Ghana), Minister Margareth Menezes (Brazil), Professor Oussouby Sacko (Japan), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina (Nigeria), and Dr. Sheila Walker (USA). These leaders were recognized for their exceptional contributions to their countries and their unwavering dedication to uplifting people of African descent.
Additionally, the Hall of Fame honoured His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III and The Queen Consort Olori Atuwatse III of the Warri Kingdom, recognizing their leadership and impact within their community.
The prestigious title of MIPADian of the Decade was awarded to Former Vice President Dr. Epsy Campbell (Costa Rica) for her groundbreaking work in promoting equality and justice for people of African descent across Latin America and beyond.
The event was highlighted by the keynote speech of Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who urged the African diaspora to continue their advocacy for justice and equality. “The success of people of African descent is not just about individual accomplishments; it reflects the collective strength and resilience of our communities worldwide,” President Akufo-Addo remarked. He called for solidarity and youth leadership, dedicating his award to young people as the next generation of global changemakers.
Honoring Global Black Excellence
The MIPAD Recognition Ceremony honored over 100 individuals and organizations from fields including politics, business, media, and humanitarian work. These honorees were chosen for their dedication to elevating people of African descent and their exemplary leadership across industries.
President Akufo-Addo’s address was among the most anticipated of the evening, calling on honorees to leverage their influence to push for systemic change. “We cannot rest until every person of African descent experiences true freedom and opportunity. Our fight is for a world where Black lives are not only valued but celebrated as essential to global progress,” he said. He emphasized the need for unity within the African diaspora, noting, “When we stand together, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”

MIPAD CEO, Jonathan Olufowobi, spoke passionately about the importance of amplifying the voices of the African diaspora, particularly through youth leadership. “Tonight, we celebrate the brilliance, creativity, and courage of the African diaspora. It’s not just about individual achievements but our collective contributions to shaping the world,” said Olufowobi. “As MIPAD’s new CEO, I am proud to lead by example, guiding us into the future where young leaders take the helm.”
Olufowobi further highlighted the significance of creating sustainable opportunities for future generations. “We must build bridges for the next generation. As we celebrate today, we are laying the foundation for tomorrow’s leaders, thinkers, and changemakers,” he said, reinforcing the importance of mentorship, advocacy, and community-building within the global African diaspora.

Her Majesty Olori Atuwatse III, Queen Consort of the Warri Kingdom, left a lasting impression with her message of global Black excellence, having attended the event with His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, Olu of Warri.
