Peter Herbert OBE is a British barrister and political activist. He is an independent member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, a “part-time recorder in the crown court as well as a part-time immigration and employment tribunal judge and chair of the Society of Black Lawyers“.
He has campaigned against racism in football. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours. His professional career at the Bar has involved a number of high profile human rights cases involving the spread of human rights, employment cases and family law cases.
He has led in several murder cases and been involved in terrorist cases as a Defence advocate and he appeared in the Climbie Inquiry for one of the social work managers.
Due to his experience as an advocate for human rights he was appointed by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) as Lead Counsel in two cases one an Appeal against sentence and conviction and the last case in a trial.
His advocacy has involved him in several high profile discrimination cases against the Crown Prosecution Service and the Probation Service. Consequently he was appointed to the Attorney General’s Race Advisory Committee as a consultant between 2002 and 2005.
He also worked as a consultant for the AG, Lord Goldsmith Q.C. in the Christopher Alder case and other death in custody cases at the same time. His professional engagement with both the Law Society and the Bar Council being a member of the Bar Race Relations Committee led directly to the adoption of the Bar and Law Society Equal Opportunities Policies.
He was a member of the MPA between July 2000 and September 2008 and was able to observe and formulate the equality and diversity implementation strategy of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and see how the police function not only in the strategic setting of the policing plan for London but also how that operates in practice within the criminal Courts and within local communities.
As Vice Chair of the MPA in his first two years he took part in a number of initiatives and was an active member of the Equality Committee in particular.
