Introducing Farouq Gumel

Mr. Farouk M. Gumel is a distinguished Group Executive Director and Head of Agri-Businesses at Tropical General Investment (TGI) Group, a prominent global conglomerate operating across 13 countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

TGI Group is involved in the entire food value chain, encompassing origination/farming, processing, distribution, and branded retail. Mr. Gumel also serves as the Chairman of WACOT Rice Limited, which stands as one of Nigeria’s largest state-of-the-art rice mills.

With nearly two decades of experience, Mr. Gumel is recognized for his expertise in consulting, audit, corporate finance, advisory services, and asset management.

Prior to joining TGI, he was a Partner and Head of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) West African Advisory/Consulting business, overseeing operations in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Angola. His career at PwC spanned various roles across the United Kingdom, United States, and West Africa from 2002 to 2015.

From 2016 to 2020, he served as an Honorary Advisor to the Presidency of Nigeria on agriculture and food security, contributing significantly to initiatives such as the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) and the National Food Security program. He also played a key role in the development of agriculture and food-related backward integration policies.

Currently, Mr. Gumel holds pivotal leadership positions, including Chairman of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Union Bank of Nigeria, the country’s second oldest and sixth largest bank.

A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), he has served on numerous Presidential and Ministerial task forces and committees for over a decade. He is also a life member of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Gumel holds a Master’s degree with Distinction in Clean Technology from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, earned in 2001. He completed his undergraduate studies with a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Materials (Leather) Technology from the University of Northampton in 2000.
