The #BlackLivesMatters movement was founded to combat racism, anti-blackness and to affirm the dignity of black lives after the killing of the 17-year-old Trayvon Martins. When she was asked why she made this movement a core focus she said “ It’s a love note for our people but it also a demand” in her interview with The Nation

She’s also actively involved in a leading black organization involved in immigrant rights called the Black Alliance for Just Immigrant (BAJI) which is one of the foremost black organization looking out for the rights of immigrants.

We are glad she’s part of this  MIPAD #Classof2017 Religious and Humanitarian Category. Well done Opal.Continue the good fight for Black Justice and Freedom.
