Korrine Sky is the Founder, Africans in Ukraine Education Fund.
She was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Leicester, UK, then moved to Ukraine to pursue her medical studies. But when the Russian military attacked Kyiv, she knew she had to escape with her fiancé, a neurosurgeon, to ensure their safety.
She encountered difficulties trying to flee the country as an African student, but she took action by creating the Africans in Ukraine Telegram group to help others in similar situations.
Her advocacy efforts led to her fundraising over £300,000 to support African students fleeing the conflict. The journey from Dnipro to Lviv was treacherous and took 26 hours, but with the help of Twitter, she documented her journey and eventually reached Romania where they were welcomed by volunteers.
After a challenging journey back to the UK, she arrived back in Leicester with her daughter. Her experiences as a refugee sparked her passion for education, and she has been dedicated to advocating for equal access to education for refugees.
She shared her story at the United Transforming Education Summit in September 2022 and later became a UNHCR as a Young Champion for Refugees and a United Nations Women UK Delegate for CSW67.
She is committed to fighting for the rights of refugees and ensuring they have access to education and success.
Well done!!
