Mutale Nkonde is a prominent figure in the realm of technology policy, serving as a Visiting Policy Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute and CEO of AI for the People.

With a keen focus on responsible AI, her organization aims to develop anti-racist product policies within the public sector. Nkonde’s advocacy efforts gained traction when AI for the People spearheaded the push for the Algorithmic Accountability Act’s introduction to the US House of Representatives in 2019.

Her impact extends beyond advocacy as she actively engages with policymakers. In 2023, Nkonde participated in one of Senator Schumer’s AI Insight Panels, showcasing her expertise in the field.

In 2024, she played a pivotal role as one of the civil society leaders assisting the Congressional Black Caucus in the United States in developing their AI Policy platform.

Her academic background is equally impressive. She holds a BSc. (Hons) in Sociology from Leeds Metropolitan University and a Master’s Degree in American Studies from Columbia University.

Despite facing challenges, such as the retraction of a paper on a right-wing influence campaign in 2022, Nkonde’s determination remains unwavering.

In response, she applied to Cambridge University to delve deeper into the topic, leading to her acceptance as a Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholar. From October 2024, she will pursue a Ph.D. in Digital Humanities, focusing on researching Black right-wing influence campaigns.
