Today, August 19th 2023 we celebrate World Humanitarian Day.
What does humanitarian mean?
It is a word that comes from the word humanity which describes the qualities that make us human such as the ability to love and have compassion.
And how did it come about?
On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
In line with this, MIPAD recognizes the people of African Descent in the Activism & Humanitarian Category globally each year,showcasing their positive contributions to societies.
This Recognition Week, September 29th-October 2nd,2023 in New York we will be celebrating the honorees who made it to our global list below;-
